I’m Cory Alger, proud owner of Southern Comfort Flooring.
I look forward to sharing my story. I hope that you will enjoy getting to know me better.
I grew up on a farm just outside of Okotoks, Alberta in the MD of Foothills #31. I worked in multiple industries over the years such as asphalt paving, retaining wall construction, pipeline construction, golf course maintenance, vehicle detailing and of course everyday work on the farm. After leaving the oil and gas industry in 2014, I found myself working at a flooring installation company in Calgary A.B.
I immediately found a connection between the ability to work with my hands to create a beautiful product for a client, and the satisfaction of seeing their faces as they marvel at their new floor. This gave me a deep sense of appreciation. For two years I sharpened and refined my skills, learning about different products, tools, and tricks that came with the Hardwood flooring industry.
Through unforeseen circumstances, the company we worked for closed its doors. I didn’t know where to go, nor want to look for a new industry to work in. I also didn’t want to start at another flooring company just to work my way up the income ladder again. So, I began Southern Comfort Flooring and dedicated myself to making flooring renovations a more enjoyable experience.
I started this company with only a half-ton truck and a twelve-foot cargo trailer. I had very few connections in the industry and used most of my savings from the oil patch to buy the necessary tools I needed.
Today, that 12ft cargo trailer has been upgraded to a new 14’ trailer with custom flooring racks we built ourselves for a better showroom experience. We upgraded our work truck to a new Ford Transit, to allow us to carry more essential tools for quality installations. We retail from 5 major flooring manufacturers locally and internationally to provide a wide range of styles to choose from.
I have been working in the flooring industry for 6 years and proud to say this is Southern Comfort Flooring’s 4th year in operation. I have enjoyed the aspects of business and loved coming up with new ideas for tools or procedures to complete work.
As a business owner, I believe in “Do it right, or don’t do it at all!” If customers want hardwood floors, but won’t spend the money on a humidifier, then they don’t need that product. Don’t buy an expensive product but end up cheap on the underlay, cleaning materials, or installation cost. Too many times I’ve seen people practically throw their money away because they thought they could skip a step thinking it wasn’t that important.
I run my business on values like creativity, competency, honesty, leadership, trustworthiness, and reputation. I put hard work and perseverance as key elements in the success of our business, and I always put my best foot forward and aim to make our buyers happy, instead of collecting a check from them and acting like the job is done.
Seeing a completed project definitely plays a significant role in pushing me toward the next project. I also take immense pleasure in educating clients on the different types of flooring products and the added benefits and downfalls. When I complete a job, I aim to make the client feel confident about their choice as they were informed about each product and made a decision that best suits their lifestyle.
The most rewarding part is seeing a client’s reaction to something we created. The part I love about this business is clients going over the top about our hard work and raving about how smooth and easy the project was.
Receiving an award from homeowners on Houzz.com for “Best Customer Service” in the flooring industry in 2017 gave me immense satisfaction, and it is something I aspire to win again.
When I am not at work, I enjoy snowboarding, golfing, refinishing furniture or creating my own pieces of furniture.
I have enjoyed sharing my story about the things which matter to me and how they influence the way I do business.
